The Village Life
In late 2008, after weeks and months of hard work tendering, Munnelly Support Services Ltd secured what would become the first of three eventual packages at one of the UK's most prestigious building projects, namely Plot N015 at the c£1 billion Athlete's Village in Stratford East London. In 2009 the Sitewide Logistics package was secured and in 2010 the Sitewide Waste package was also secured, and so began an historical and momentous journey we affectionately call: The Village Life.
N015 In 2008 Munnelly Support Services secured and won the tender for Logistics and Waste Management within Plot
N015 at The Athlete's Village.
N015 was unique in the fact that it was the first plot to start construction and would therefore set the benchmark for all of the other Plots to follow. N015 (and in turn all of the other Plots) presented a further challenge in that although it is part of The Athlete's Village it is regarded as an individual project within the site, a site within a site.
During our three year duration our role was to support our Client in achieving the goals and high standards set by ensuring that Trade Contractors' deliveries were booked in via our Logistics Manager using the online delivery management system. Deliveries were then received into the Plot's individual loading bay by our Traffic Marshal and Loading Bay Supervisor and then safely off-loaded using our Forklift Driver who would then distribute to the relevant Trade Contractor. To enable this to run as effectively as possible we had to ensure that there was clear and constant liaison between Trade Contractors and our Client.
In addition to this, on a daily basis our Multi-Service Gangs would carry out various works within and around the Plot and our Waste Management Team would ensure that the floor plates were kept clean and tidy all the while ensuring that Trade Contractors were in possession of enough bins to dispose of their specific wastes via the correct waste streams.
Due to this Plot being the first of its kind Munnellys were met with a wide variety of challenges due to numerous design changes coupled with programme constraints and revisions to name but a few.
Just prior to our completion at the end of December 2011 Munnellys received numerous accolades from the Client which culminated in an individual award for our Logistics Manager which was the ODA Health, Safety and Environment Award 2011, something which is proudly displayed in our Head Office.
Sitewide Logistics
With N015 well underway, Munnellys successfully tendered and secured the Sitewide Logistics package.
Beginning in April 2009 this package presented enormous logistical challenges as not only did Munnellys have to manage the pedestrian and vehicle traffic for The Athlete's Village but we also had to manage the deliveries via The Athlete's Village into Europe's biggest urban shopping centre, Westfield.
Our objective was to ensure that all Plots booked in their deliveries via the Plot's Logistics representative (for example Munnellys on N015) using the online delivery management system which was centrally controlled by our DMS Co-Ordinator. Once the deliveries had passed all security checks they were then allowed to enter the site and were controlled and directed to their destination by our Traffic Marshals, who whilst doing this were also controlling the pedestrians who were going to and from their place of work. To gain an appreciation for the scale of pedestrian and vehicle traffic Munnellys had to manage it is worth noting the following:
1. There have been over 500,000 deliveries successfully received to date;
2. There have been a total of 38,000 people working at The Athlete's Village with a maximum of 6,400 people at one time.
Given these incredible statistics there have been no reportable traffic incidents or road accidents during our 3 year duration which is testament to the professionalism and high standard of our Marshals and management team. To this end, Munnellys Traffic Marshal team has been nominated for numerous awards, including SHE, ODA and site based awards to which many individuals have won. In fact, during a week's period members of the ODA and our Client participated in traffic marshalling duties under the guidance / tutelage our Traffic Marshals to which upon completion much praise and was given to not only the individuals but to the service being provided.
In addition to the managing of the site traffic our Multi-Service Gangs would carry out a variety of different roles outside of the plots including fixing, moving and reinstating traffic signage, moving red and white barriers to suit the ever evolving traffic management plan which was co-ordinated on a weekly basis with our on site management team and Client.
Conclusion
At the time of publishing we are currently still providing a service under the Sitewide Logistics package specifically, Traffic Marshals and a small Multi-Service Gang. Looking back over the three year span it never ceases to amaze just how much we have achieved during this time and how proud we are as a Company that we have played a vital role in helping deliver a project that will forever be in the pages of UK history.
